Description

The HAL HTT-40, or Hindustan Turbo Trainer-40, is an Indian training aircraft designed and built by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) as a replacement for the Indian Air Force's retired HPT-32 Deepak. The project formally began in 2013 with internal funding of ₹350 crore from HAL after an earlier rejection of the design by the Air Force due to cost concerns compared to the Pilatus PC-7 Mk II. Despite initial doubts about its future, the HTT-40 project continued, with the first prototype rolling out on 2 February 2016 and making its first flight on 31 May 2016. Its first public introduction flight was on 17 June 2016, and it completed spin certification flight testing by August 2021.

The HAL HTT-40 is a tandem seat trainer aircraft, designed with a focus on aerodynamics suitable for basic flight training. It is powered by a Honeywell Garrett TPE331-12B turboprop engine producing 1,100 shp, though derated to 950 shp, and it is equipped with a 4-bladed propeller. A deal was signed in 2022 for 88 engines along with maintenance and support. Though primarily a trainer, it can be armed with guns, rockets, and bombs.

The HAL HTT-40 is slated to replace the Indian Air Force's (IAF) HPT-32 Deepak as a basic trainer. The Defence Acquisition Council approved the procurement of 106 aircraft in August 2020. An initial order of 70 HTT-40s with an option for 38 more was placed following a request for proposal from the IAF at Aero India 2021, and a contract for these 70 was concluded at DefExpo 2022. The first aircraft is expected to be delivered in September 2025, with the initial order to be fulfilled within four years. Plans include procuring the remaining 36 after operationalization, with a possible follow-on order of 38 more units.

Main Variants:

  • HTT-40 Prototype 1: The initial prototype was used for testing the aircraft's basic design and flight characteristics, leading to further refinements.

  • HTT-40 Prototype 2: The second prototype incorporated improvements based on the first prototype's testing, focusing on enhanced performance and systems integration.

  • HTT-40 Production Variant: This variant, set for delivery to the Indian Air Force, incorporates all the final design improvements and meets the operational requirements for basic flight training.
