Description

This national banner features three horizontal bands consisting of aquamarine at the top and bottom with a gold stripe in the center. A black equilateral triangle is situated at the hoist, with its base aligned against the flagpole and its apex pointing toward the fly.

Symbolism

The aquamarine stripes represent the waters of the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea that surround the islands. Gold symbolizes the sun's rays as well as the abundant natural land resources found within the archipelago. The black triangle signifies the enterprise, strength, and unified determination of the Bahamian people to develop their resources. Together, these elements commemorate the geographic beauty of the nation alongside the character of its citizenry.

History

On July 10, 1973, the current design was officially hoisted to coincide with the nation's independence from the United Kingdom. This flag replaced the British Blue Ensign, which had previously featured the colonial seal of the islands. The final composition resulted from a national competition and incorporates various elements from several submitted entries. Dr. Hervis Bain is often credited with refining the final artistic elements of the design.
