Symbolism
Sky blue represents peace and the hope for a stable future for the people. Sacrifice is represented by the red stripe, signifying the blood of the country's martyrs. Yellow fimbriation and the star denote the nation's mineral wealth, while the star itself also symbolizes unity. These elements collectively reflect the national aspirations for progress and sovereignty.
History
Official adoption of the current flag occurred on February 20, 2006, following the ratification of a new constitution. This design closely resembles the national standard used from 1963 to 1971, which replaced the original 1960 independence flag. During the Zaire era between 1971 and 1997, a completely different green flag was utilized under the leadership of Mobutu Sese Seko. Selection of this version in 2006 was intended to unify the country under a common historical symbol.
