Flag of the Congo

This rectangular banner consists of three horizontal stripes in red, green, and yellow. It maintains a 2:3 aspect ratio and lacks any additional emblems or symbols. The visual design is defined by the simple arrangement of these three colored sections.

Red honors the memory of the martyrs who sacrificed their lives during the struggle for independence. Green signifies the country's vast agriculture and its extensive tropical forests. Yellow represents the natural wealth of the land and the nobility of the Congolese people. Collectively, these Pan-African colors emphasize a shared heritage with other nations across the continent.

Originally adopted on August 18, 1959, this tricolor design was created as the Republic of the Congo moved toward independence from France. Prior to this, the French Tricolor was the official flag used during the colonial period. A red field with socialist symbols replaced the design in 1970, but the original colors were officially reinstated on June 10, 1991. This restoration followed a national sovereignty conference that sought to reclaim the country's founding identity.
