Description

A blue field is bisected horizontally by a single yellow stripe positioned slightly below the midline. In the upper hoist corner, two white five-pointed stars are arranged with the upper star being smaller than the lower one. The overall proportions of the design adhere to a 2:3 aspect ratio.

Symbolism

The blue backgrounds represent the Caribbean Sea and the sky, while the yellow stripe denotes the bright sun that shines over the island. Both stars signify the two islands of the territory, with the larger star representing Curaçao and the smaller one representing Klein Curaçao. Each star features five points to honor the five continents from which the local inhabitants have migrated. Peace and happiness are further symbolized by the white color of the stars.

History

Following a design competition that received over 2,000 entries, the current flag was officially adopted on July 2, 1984. Martin den Dulk, who was eighteen at the time, submitted the winning design which was selected by a specialized committee. Prior to this adoption, the island was represented by the flag of the Netherlands Antilles, consisting of a white field with intersecting red and blue stripes. This transition occurred as the island sought to establish a unique visual identity separate from the broader administrative grouping of the Antillean islands.
