History
Initially designed in 1881 for the Estonian Students' Society, this tricolor became the national flag upon the country's independence in 1918. During the period of Soviet occupation beginning in 1940, the flag was prohibited and replaced by the flag of the Estonian SSR. The Supreme Soviet of the Estonian SSR officially reinstated the blue-black-white tricolor as the national flag on August 7, 1990.
