Description

This national banner consists of three equal horizontal bands, with turquoise blue at the top and bottom and white in the center. Positioned within the middle stripe are five small, five-pointed stars arranged in a quincunx pattern. The overall rectangular dimensions follow a 1:2 aspect ratio.

Symbolism

Representing the geographical location of the country, the blue stripes denote the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. The white band symbolizes the land of Honduras as well as the virtues of peace and honesty among its citizens. Each of the five stars stands for one of the former Central American federation members—Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua—reflecting a historical desire for regional unity.

History

Following the dissolution of the United Provinces of Central America, Honduras adopted its specific version of the blue-white-blue horizontal tricolor on February 16, 1866. Throughout the 20th century, a darker navy blue was frequently used in practice despite the original legislative language. Upon the inauguration of President Xiomara Castro in January 2022, the government formally restored the lighter turquoise shade specified in the 19th-century decree.
