Description

This national banner features three equal horizontal bands of black, white, and green from top to bottom. A red triangle is positioned at the hoist, extending toward the center of the field. Centered within this red triangle is a single white seven-pointed star.

Symbolism

The colors represent the historical caliphates of the Arab world: black for the Abbasid, white for the Umayyad, and green for the Fatimid. A red chevron symbolizes the Hashemite dynasty and the struggle for independence during the Great Arab Revolt. The seven-pointed star denotes the seven verses of the Al-Fatiha in the Quran, as well as the unity and hope of the Arab people.

History

Officially adopted on April 16, 1928, the design is based on the flag used during the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire in 1916. While Jordan gained full independence from the British mandate in 1946, the current flag remained unchanged from its earlier Transjordanian version. Prior to this, the region utilized the flag of the Kingdom of Hejaz, which featured the same colors but lacked the seven-pointed star.
