Flag of Lithuania

The national flag of Lithuania features three equal horizontal bands arranged from top to bottom. These stripes are colored yellow, green, and red, respectively. It is a rectangular banner with an aspect ratio of 3:5 and lacks any additional symbols or emblems.

Yellow at the top of the flag signifies the sun, the light of progress, and the golden fields of ripened grain common in the countryside. The middle green band represents the nation's lush forests and the enduring hope for a prosperous future. Red at the base commemorates the blood shed by Lithuanian patriots and the bravery displayed during the struggle for freedom. Collectively, these elements reflect the country's deep connection to its natural landscape and its historical resilience.

Initially adopted in 1918 during the first period of independence, the tricolor was later banned under Soviet rule in favor of various regional SSR designs. The current version was officially reinstated on March 20, 1989, just prior to the restoration of the state's sovereignty in 1990. While the colors remained consistent with the early 20th-century original, the legal aspect ratio was adjusted from 1:2 to 3:5 in September 2004. This modern design serves as a departure from the historical red banners of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania which typically featured the Vytis knight.
