Description
The flag of Montenegro consists of a red field surrounded by a golden border on all four edges. A central coat of arms depicts a two-headed golden eagle carrying a blue and green shield featuring a golden lion. Small white highlights appear on the scepter and the globus cruciger held within the eagle's talons.
Symbolism
The double-headed eagle is an ancient heraldic symbol representing the unity of church and state, specifically referencing the heritage of the Petrović-Njegoš dynasty. Centered on the eagle, the lion passant serves as a symbol of episcopal authority and the biblical 'Lion of Judah' from the nation's theocratic period. Red serves as the primary color to honor the bravery and sacrifice of citizens during the nation's historical struggles for sovereignty.
History
On July 12, 2004, the Parliament of Montenegro officially adopted this design to replace the former red-blue-white tricolor. This change occurred while Montenegro was still part of a state union with Serbia, two years before the 2006 independence referendum. The current flag draws direct inspiration from the state banner used during the reign of King Nicholas I in the early 20th century.
