Description

Qatar's flag features a field of white on its hoist side, separated by nine saw-tooth points from a maroon field on its fly side. The flag's aspect ratio is a distinctive 11:28, making it notably longer than it is tall. No other symbols or emblems are present on the flag's surface.

Symbolism

The white on the flag symbolizes peace, reflecting Qatar's desire for harmonious international relations. The maroon color represents the blood shed in Qatar's numerous wars, particularly during the late 19th century. The nine points signify Qatar's inclusion as the ninth member of the 'reconciled emirates' following the Qatari-British treaty of 1916.

History

The current flag of Qatar was officially adopted on July 9, 1971, following the nation's independence from British protectorate status. Prior to this, Qatar used a similar flag, but it was of a different shade of red and included a diamond pattern. The change to maroon was reportedly made to better resist fading in the desert sun. The number of points separating the colors has remained consistent at nine since its adoption.
