Description
Romania's flag features three vertical bands of equal width. The band closest to the hoist is blue, followed by yellow in the center, and red at the fly. These colors are arranged in a simple tricolor design.
Symbolism
The colors of the Romanian flag are traditionally associated with the country's principalities: red for Wallachia, yellow for Oltenia, and blue for Moldavia. Some interpretations connect the blue to liberty, yellow to justice, and red to fraternity. These colors are also linked to national ideals and values, representing the courage, sacrifice, and unity of the Romanian people.
History
The current design was officially adopted on December 27, 1989, following the Romanian Revolution. While a similar tricolor had been used historically, the communist era saw the addition of a coat of arms in the center. Its removal symbolized the end of the communist regime and the return to a more traditional design. The colors themselves have roots in earlier principalities and flags of Wallachia and Moldavia.
