Description
Rwanda's flag features three horizontal bands of color. A large blue band occupies the top half, followed by a yellow band, and a green band, each taking up one quarter of the flag's height. In the upper right corner of the blue band is a golden sun with radiating rays.
Symbolism
The vibrant blue color of the top band signifies happiness and peace. Yellow symbolizes economic development and the prospect of prosperity. Green represents hope and Rwanda's natural resources. The sun symbolizes enlightenment, unity, and transparency, representing a new beginning for the nation.
History
This flag was officially adopted on December 31, 2001, replacing the previous red, black, and green tricolor. Its adoption coincided with a period of national reconciliation and rebuilding following the Rwandan genocide. The former flag, associated with the previous government, was seen as divisive. The new design aimed to represent unity and hope for the future.
