Symbolism
Green, yellow, and red are Pan-African colors, representing unity and independence across the continent. Green symbolizes hope, progress, and Islam, while yellow represents wealth and progress. Red signifies sacrifice and determination to fight for progress. The green star is a symbol of hope and unity, representing Senegal's commitment to secularism and its openness to all five continents.
History
The current flag of Senegal was adopted on August 20, 1960, following the dissolution of the Mali Federation. This federation, comprising Senegal and the Sudanese Republic (present-day Mali), had used a similar flag. Prior to the federation, Senegal was part of French West Africa and flew the French Tricolore. The Senegalese flag has remained unchanged since its adoption in 1960.
