History

The flag of Suriname was officially adopted on November 25, 1975, coinciding with the country's independence from the Netherlands. It replaced the flag of the Dutch colony of Suriname. There have been no changes to the flag's design since its initial adoption in 1975. Prior to independence, several proposals for a national flag were considered, including designs incorporating multiple colors and symbols.
