Symbolism
The red field represents the struggle for national liberation. Yellow symbolizes the traces of colonialism in Timor-Leste's history. Black signifies the obscurantism that needs to be overcome. The white star serves as a guide to freedom and represents peace, while the white specifically evokes light.
History
First adopted in 2002 upon independence, the flag of Timor-Leste was initially used in 1975 when Timor-Leste first declared independence from Portugal. However, this independence was short-lived due to the Indonesian invasion. The flag was maintained as a symbol of resistance during the Indonesian occupation and was formally readopted on May 20, 2002, when independence was restored.
