Symbolism
The red stripe symbolizes bloodshed and the struggle for independence. White represents a bright future and hope for the nation. Black commemorates the dark past and oppression. These colors are common in flags across the Arab world, often reflecting pan-Arab sentiment and historical unity.
History
Yemen's current flag was officially adopted on May 22, 1990, the day that North Yemen and South Yemen unified. It replaced the flags of the Yemen Arab Republic (North Yemen) and the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen (South Yemen). The flag is based on the Arab Liberation Flag, which inspired many Arab nations' flags during the 20th century.
