Description

Abston Air National Guard Station is a military installation located in Montgomery, Alabama. The station has served as the headquarters for the 226th Combat Communications Group since February 1996, when the unit relocated from Martin Air National Guard Station in Gadsden, Alabama.

The installation is operated by the Alabama Air National Guard. The primary resident unit is the Headquarters, 226th Combat Communications Group, which is one of two Air National Guard combat communications groups in the United States. These groups provide approximately 60 percent of the United States Air Forceโ€™s tactical communications capability. The mission of the units stationed at Abston Air National Guard Station is to command, organize, equip, and administer forces to ensure readiness for United States Air Force requirements and to provide communications and engineering support during state emergencies. The 226th Combat Communications Group is assigned to Air Combat Command as its gaining command.

Abston Air National Guard Station hosts the 232d Combat Communications Squadron in addition to the group headquarters. The facility supports the administrative and operational requirements of the 226th Combat Communications Group, which manages subordinate squadrons across multiple states and territories, including units in Puerto Rico, Georgia, North Carolina, Maine, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Florida. Operations at the station involve the use of tactical communications technology, including the AN/TRC-170 tropospheric scatter radio system.
