Missile M-4
Description
The M4 is a French submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) that entered service on 1 May 1985. It was the first French missile to utilize multiple independently targetable reentry vehicle (MIRV) technology.
The missile is a three-stage solid-fuel rocket. It employs an inertial guidance system. The armament consists of six TN 71 warheads, each with a yield of 150 kilotonnes. The payload includes penetration aids.
France was the sole operator of the M4, deploying the system within the French Navy. The missiles were carried by Redoutable-class submarines, with the exception of the Redoutable itself, which was not refitted for the system. The M4 was replaced by the M45 SLBM.
