Missile M-11 Shtorm (SA-N-3 Goblet)
Description
Development of the M-11 Shtorm was authorized in 1959. The project was originally intended for the Project 1126 warship but was reassigned to the Project 1123 Moskva-class helicopter carrier following the cancellation of the former program in 1961. Sea trials took place between 1964 and 1966 on the testbed OS-24. Although the system was installed on the Moskva in 1967, it was not officially accepted into service until 1969. The M-11 has no land-based counterpart.
The M-11 Shtorm, designated 4K60 by the GRAU and SA-N-3 Goblet by NATO, is a naval medium-range surface-to-air missile system. The system utilizes twin rail launchers fed from below-deck magazines. Guidance is provided via radio command, supported by the radar system designated "Head Lights" in Western nomenclature, typically operating alongside "Top Sail" search radars. The missiles reach speeds between Mach 2 and Mach 3 and are equipped with warheads. Two primary variants were produced: the initial 4K60 Shtorm using V611 missiles and the upgraded 4K65 Shtorm-M using V611M missiles.
The system entered service with the Soviet Navy and remains in the Russian inventory. It was deployed on several classes of vessels, including Moskva-class helicopter carriers, Kresta II-class guided missile cruisers, Kara-class guided missile cruisers, and Kiev-class aircraft carriers. The M-11 was used exclusively by Soviet and Russian forces and has seen no combat use.
