Missile Soumar

Description

The Soumar is an Iranian long-range cruise missile that was first publicly revealed in 2015. Its design indicates a strong derivative link to the Soviet Kh-55 cruise missile, several of which were acquired by Iran from Ukraine in 2001. The system is named after the village of Soumar, which was the site of a chemical weapons attack during the war with Iraq.

This system is a surface-to-surface cruise missile whose operational capabilities are largely inferred from its lineage. Based on its close resemblance to the Kh-55, its effective range is speculated to be between 2,000 and 3,000 kilometers. Some security analysts have raised concerns that cruise missiles with potential nuclear capabilities, such as the Soumar, were not specifically covered under the terms of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) or UN Security Council Resolution 2231.

The Soumar missile system is noted as having been in service with Iranian forces since approximately 2012, several years prior to its official public unveiling.
