Description
Commissioned on 10 March 2026 during a handover ceremony at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries' Kobe shipyard and assigned to Submarine Division 2 of Submarine Flotilla 2 at Yokosuka. JS Chōgei ("Long Whale") is the fifth Taigei-class diesel-electric attack submarine, displacing 3,000 tonnes with an 84-metre hull. Equipped with lithium-ion batteries, Type 18 torpedoes, and UGM-84L Harpoon Block II anti-ship missiles, the Taigei class offers improved detection capability and reduced acoustic signature compared to predecessors.
