Description
The Ada class is a series of anti-submarine warfare corvettes developed for the Turkish Navy under the MILGEM project. Engineering focused on establishing a national corvette design capable of high-seas patrol and anti-submarine operations. The design incorporates low observability principles in its materials and hull form. Construction of the lead vessel, TCG Heybeliada, began in July 2005 at the Istanbul Naval Shipyard, and it entered service in September 2011. The Turkish Navy commissioned four vessels in the series between 2011 and 2019. The acquisition model utilized the first two ships as testing platforms to optimize the design and system configuration for subsequent units.
The class utilizes a Combined Diesel and Gas (CODAG) propulsion system consisting of a gas turbine and two diesel engines driving two shafts. This configuration allows for operation in diesel, gas turbine, or combined modes. For combat management, early units used the GENESIS system, while the fourth ship, TCG Kınalıada, introduced the ADVENT system. The design includes a national hull-mounted sonar housed in a nano-enhanced fiber-reinforced polymer dome. Navigation is managed via an Electronic Chart Precise Integrated Navigation System, and an Integrated Platform Management System monitors machinery, power distribution, and damage control. Aviation facilities include a hangar and platform capable of supporting S-70B Seahawk helicopters or unmanned aerial vehicles, with provisions for aircraft fuel and maintenance.
The Turkish Navy currently operates four Ada-class corvettes. The design has been adapted for other specialized roles; the SIGINT ship TCG Ufuk and the Hisar-class offshore patrol vessels utilize the same hull and superstructure design. Several international navies have ordered variants of the class. Pakistan contracted for four vessels in 2018, designated as the Babur class, under an agreement that included a transfer of technology. The Ukrainian Navy ordered two units, with the first vessel, Hetman Ivan Mazepa, undergoing sea trials in 2024. In June 2024, the Royal Malaysian Navy officially ordered three ships. Additionally, industry reports from 2023 indicate that four vessels were exported to an unnamed Middle Eastern country. The class has participated in international maritime activities, including naval exercises in the Mediterranean Sea.
