Description
This Spanish corvette class was developed as part of a modular family of vessels sharing a common design standard but adapted for varying mission requirements. Production began in 2009 to fulfill naval requirements in South America, with the first units entering commission in 2011. The program was later expanded through international agreements to produce a specialized variant for Middle Eastern naval forces, with construction continuing into the present decade.
The Avante 2200 is a multi-mission combatant designed to execute anti-submarine (ASW), anti-surface (ASuW), and anti-air warfare (AAW). The platform utilizes a COmbined Diesel And Diesel (CODAD) propulsion arrangement driving controllable pitch propellers. Its technical architecture integrates a proprietary combat management system with specialized sub-systems for fire control, integrated communications, and bridge management. The sensor suite includes multifunction 3D radars, electro-optical tracking systems, and electronic support measures. Primary armament is centered on a 76mm main gun and a 35mm naval revolver gun system for close-in defense. Depending on the variant, the vessel may also be equipped with vertical launching systems for surface-to-air missiles, quad anti-ship missile launchers, and triple torpedo tubes. Aviation facilities include a flight deck and hangar to support organic aerial operations.
Operational use of the class is split between the Bolivarian Navy of Venezuela and the Royal Saudi Navy. The Venezuelan units, designated as the Guaiquerí class, were commissioned for patrol and maritime surveillance; however, the active fleet was reduced following a grounding incident in 2012 that resulted in the loss of one vessel. The Saudi Arabian Al Jubail-class units are currently being integrated into active service, with the program including provisions for long-term life cycle support. These vessels are deployed to maintain maritime security and provide multi-threat defense capabilities within their respective operational theaters.
