Description
The Barentshav class consists of three offshore patrol vessels operated by the Royal Norwegian Navy. Developed to replace the leased vessels Chieftain, Tromsø, and Stålbas, the ships were built by Myklebust Verft to the Vik-Sandvik VS 794 CGV design.
The propulsion system utilizes liquefied natural gas (LNG), a configuration intended to reduce nitrogen oxide and carbon dioxide emissions compared to vessels of similar size using conventional fuels. The design incorporates specific equipment for the NATO Submarine Rescue System. Deck hardware includes a towing winch and a crane to facilitate maritime assistance and recovery operations. Remøy Management operates the vessels on behalf of the Norwegian Coast Guard, utilizing a complement of both military and civilian personnel.
The primary operational roles for the class include Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) patrol, fishery inspection, and search and rescue. The vessels are also maintained for tug readiness to monitor and assist tanker traffic along the Norwegian coastline. The lead ship, NoCGV Barentshav, was delivered in August 2009. The remaining two vessels, NoCGV Bergen and NoCGV Sortland, entered service in 2010. All three vessels are currently active.
