Description
The Diana class, also designated as the Minor Standard Craft Mk II, was developed to replace the Barsø-class patrol boats of the Royal Danish Navy. The vessels were ordered from Faaborg Værft A/S in 2004. Construction of the hulls, superstructures, and machinery was carried out by Kockums at their shipyard in Karlskrona, Sweden.
The vessels are constructed of glass-reinforced plastic. The propulsion system consists of diesel engines driving shafts with controllable pitch propellers. A design feature of the class is the inclusion of space for a StanFlex container, which allows for mission-specific reconfiguration. The ships provide internal accommodation for 15 personnel.
The lead ship, HDMS Diana, entered service in 2007, with all six vessels in the class commissioned by the end of 2009. The class is operated by the Royal Danish Navy’s 2nd Squadron. While the vessels were initially tasked with fisheries protection, search and rescue, and general patrol, they are currently assigned to international and combat operations.
