Description

The Diciotti class is an Italian-designed offshore patrol vessel developed and built by Fincantieri at the Muggiano and Riva Trigoso shipyards. The design originated from the experimental Saettia Mk1, leading to the production of several variants for domestic and international operators between 1984 and 2009. The class consists of four primary configurations: Saettia Mk1, Mk2, Mk3, and Mk4.

The Saettia Mk2 is a lengthened version of the original design. The Mk3 variant, developed for the Armed Forces of Malta, features a reinforced rear deck to support helicopter operations for aircraft such as the AW139. This version includes a stern ramp for the launch and recovery of rigid-hull inflatable boats (RHIBs). The Mk4 variant, produced for the Iraqi Navy, also utilizes a stern ramp and is configured with increased internal accommodations for a larger complement. Propulsion for the class is provided by diesel engines driving shafts with variable-pitch propellers. Some versions are equipped with bow thrusters. Sensor systems include X and S band navigation radars and infrared search and track (IRST) fire control systems.

The Italian Coast Guard initially operated the Saettia Mk1 and Mk2. In 2014, Italy delivered two Mk2 vessels, the Ubaldo Diciotti (CP-902) and Luigi Dattilo (CP-903), to the National Air and Navy Service of Panama, where they were redesignated as P 901 and P 902.

The Armed Forces of Malta commissioned the P61, a Saettia Mk3, in 2005 to replace Kondor-class patrol boats. The vessel serves as the flagship of the Maritime Squadron and is used for border control and search and rescue operations. In 2017, the P61 underwent a refit where its original Isotta Fraschini engines were replaced with Caterpillar engines. The vessel has been deployed for humanitarian aid missions, including a 2023 assignment to provide relief in Libya.

The Iraqi Navy operates four Saettia Mk4 vessels, known as the Fateh class. These ships were ordered in 2006 to patrol Iraq's exclusive economic zone and manage maritime traffic. The first vessel, Fateh, reached Umm Qasr in 2009. Iraqi crews for these vessels received training from the Italian Navy, including bridge simulator courses at the Naval Academy in Livorno. These units are also utilized for firefighting and search and rescue duties.
