Overview

The Italian Navy is enhancing its position as a key maritime power in the Mediterranean and expanding its operational reach. Its strategy is centered on protecting national interests in the "enlarged Mediterranean," a region stretching from the Strait of Gibraltar to the Gulf of Aden, while also increasing its presence in the Indo-Pacific to support international security and stability. This is demonstrated by its participation in and leadership of multinational operations such as the EU's Aspides in the Red Sea and Mare Sicuro in the central Mediterranean.

The fleet is a balanced mix of blue-water assets. It is built around two aircraft carriers, which can form the core of a carrier strike group and an expeditionary strike group, a capability few navies possess. This is complemented by modern destroyers, a significant force of anti-submarine and general-purpose frigates, and a capable submarine flotilla that includes air-independent propulsion (AIP) boats. Amphibious capabilities are centered on amphibious transport docks, including a new large multi-role amphibious assault ship.

A robust shipbuilding program is rapidly renewing the fleet. Key projects include the versatile Thaon di Revel-class multipurpose combat ships (PPA), which bridge the gap between offshore patrol vessels and frigates. The navy is also inducting new FREMM EVO frigates with advanced technologies and anti-drone capabilities, a new logistic support ship to enhance its operational endurance, and is planning for the mid-life upgrade of its submarine fleet. These programs are supported by a strong domestic shipbuilding industry.

The Italian Navy's operational reach is growing, as evidenced by deployments to the Indo-Pacific, showcasing its ability to sustain operations far from home. The integration of F-35B short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL) aircraft on its carriers significantly boosts its power projection capabilities. Through large-scale multinational exercises like Mare Aperto, which involve numerous allies and advanced systems, Italy reinforces its operational readiness and interoperability within NATO and other international frameworks. The navy is also focused on developing capabilities in emerging domains like unmanned systems and cognitive warfare.
