Description
The procurement of this guided-missile frigate class was formalized in 2012 to bolster naval combat power and establish a deterrent against threats to territorial integrity. The construction process utilized a modular approach, involving the assembly of six distinct sections and the implementation of a technology transfer scheme. The lead vessel entered service in 2017, followed by a second unit in 2018. Initially, the platforms were commissioned without their full armament and electronic warfare suites, which were integrated later under a "fitted for but not with" arrangement. The program was eventually terminated following a strategic decision to cease further production due to dissatisfaction regarding foreign investment commitments and regional industrial shifts.
Designed as a multi-mission combatant, these warships are engineered for air defense, surface engagement, and sub-surface warfare. The hull incorporates stealth characteristics, specifically targeting the reduction of radar, infrared, and acoustic signatures to complicate enemy detection. The vessels utilize a combined diesel or electric propulsion system, allowing for varied tactical modes. Offensive and defensive capabilities are integrated via a centralized combat management system, coordinating surface-to-air missiles, anti-ship cruise missiles, and lightweight torpedoes. Sub-surface detection is facilitated by hull-mounted sonar, while aerial surveillance is managed through 3D radar systems. The ships also feature dedicated aviation facilities, including a hangar and flight deck to support anti-submarine warfare helicopters and secondary gun mounts for close-range engagement.
Stationed at the Surabaya naval base, these frigates are active assets within the Indonesian Navy’s fleet. They are deployed to enforce maritime sovereignty and have participated in major international naval exercises, such as RIMPAC. Operational activities include live-fire torpedo drills and patrols within territorial waters to maintain a permanent military presence.
