AS565 Panther

The Airbus Helicopters AS565 Panther is a French medium-weight twin-engine multi-role military helicopter developed by Aerospatiale. Derived from the civil AS365 Dauphin, the aircraft entered military service in 1988 with the Brazilian Army and in 1993 with French Naval Aviation. The helicopter performs troop transport, search and rescue, medical evacuation, anti-submarine warfare, and anti-surface warfare, and is designed to operate from NATO naval vessels.

Development

Aerospatiale initiated development of a dedicated military derivative of the civil SA365 N Dauphin during the 1980s. The military prototype, designated AS365M, performed its first flight on 28 February 1984, followed by two additional prototypes. Full production was launched in May 1986 as the AS365 K, which was subsequently renamed the AS565 Panther. Early production models utilized twin Turbomeca Arriel 1M1 turboshaft engines, while Eurocopter introduced the higher-powered Arriel 2C engine in 1995.

Design

The AS565 is powered by two Turbomeca Arriel turboshafts driving a main rotor and a fenestron anti-torque tail rotor system. The cabin accommodates two pilots and up to 10 fully equipped soldiers in a commando-transport configuration, with optional mission gear including a variable-speed hoist, forward-looking infrared camera, and medical suites. Flight deck systems feature a 4-axis automatic flight control system, vehicle and engine multifunction displays, terrain awareness warning systems, and search radar. Anti-submarine configurations feature the Helicopter Long-Range Active Sonar dipping system and a hydraulic Harpoon deck-lock device for shipboard operations. Airframe survivability is augmented through composite materials, low-infrared paint, jet exhaust diluters, armor-plated crew seats, and self-sealing fuel tanks.

Armament

The Panther carries weapons mounted on a universal support beam integrated with a Crouzet HDH-2A electronic sight and autopilot assistance. Payload options include 20mm cannon pods, pods for 68mm or 70mm unguided rockets, up to eight Mistral air-to-air missiles, or up to eight HOT anti-tank missiles. Naval variants deploy AS 15 TT anti-ship missiles, Mark 46 torpedoes, or Whitehead A.244/S anti-submarine torpedoes.

Operational History

French Naval Aviation received 15 Panthers between 1993 and 1998, deploying them aboard frigates for counter-piracy operations under Operation Atalanta in the Gulf of Aden. France upgraded 16 aircraft to the Standard 2 configuration featuring night-vision-compatible glass cockpits and Link 11 datalinks, with initial deliveries beginning in 2011. During the Gulf War, Royal Saudi Navy Panthers launched 15 AS 15 TT missiles against five Iraqi patrol vessels. Additional operators include the Brazilian Army, which operates upgraded AS365 K2 models, the Israeli Air Force with five AS565MA Atalef rotorcraft operating from Sa'ar 5 corvettes, and the Indonesian Navy, which ordered 11 ASW variants in 2014.
