Description

The development of this submarine class followed a request for proposal issued in late 2006 to replace the Atılay-class fleet. A contract was finalized in 2009 and came into effect in 2011, initiating a program to modernize the naval underwater inventory. The project involves the construction of six vessels, with the lead unit laid down in 2015 and commissioned in 2024. These platforms are named after 16th-century admirals and represent a shift toward incorporating domestic modifications and subsystems into a diesel-electric design.

The Reis-class utilizes air-independent propulsion based on fuel cell technology, allowing for extended submerged operations. These boats are designed as multi-role combatants, equipped with sonar and weapon control systems for underwater and surface engagement. The primary armament consists of torpedo tubes capable of deploying heavyweight torpedoes, anti-ship missiles, and naval mines. The platform's architecture is modified to integrate various electronic suites and sensor arrays, focusing on stealth and the deployment of diverse ordnance.

The Turkish Navy maintains these vessels for strategic operations and regional presence. Active units have been integrated into fleet maneuvers, including the Mavi Vatan exercises. With two units currently in service and others undergoing sea trials or construction, the class is being phased into operation at regular intervals. These submarines are deployed to fulfill the requirements of underwater warfare and maritime surveillance within the fleet's operational theater.
