Description
The design work for the Type 075 Landing Helicopter Dock began in 2011. The development process involved internal debate regarding the vessel's scale, with a larger design ultimately being favored over an enlarged version of the preceding Type 071 amphibious transport dock. Construction of the lead ship commenced in 2018. The vessel was commissioned into service in April 2021, reaching initial operating capability in March 2022. By November of the same year, the first two ships of the class were officially declared combat-ready.
Designated as an amphibious assault ship, the Type 075 features a full-length flight deck and a floodable well deck for launching amphibious craft. Its aviation facilities support extensive helicopter operations with seven flight spots, two aircraft elevators of differing sizes, and two forward weapons elevators. The hangar is estimated to support between twenty and thirty-five aircraft. The ship is engineered for amphibious landings, with a well deck capable of housing multiple air-cushioned landing craft and a vehicle deck designed to accommodate an amphibious mechanized infantry company along with supplementary tank or artillery elements. Access to the vehicle deck is facilitated by roll-on/roll-off side openings. Defensive armament consists of close-in weapon systems and surface-to-air missile launchers.
The Type 075 class, identified by the NATO reporting name Yushen-class, is operated by the People's Liberation Army Navy. The vessels are deployed across the South Sea and East Sea Fleets. The first unit was commissioned in 2021, followed by two more in 2022, with additional ships in various stages of construction and fitting out. Ships of the class have been documented operating in locations such as the ÅŒsumi Strait and the waters surrounding Hong Kong.
