Description
Aalborg Air Base, designated as Air Transport Wing Aalborg, is a Royal Danish Air Force installation located at Vadum, near Aalborg. The base shares its runway infrastructure and air traffic control services with Aalborg Airport.
The facility was established in 1938. During the German invasion of Denmark on April 9, 1940, the Luftwaffe captured the site during an airborne operation. Under German occupation, the airfield was expanded from 140 to 2,750 hectares to facilitate the transport of personnel and equipment to Norway. Royal Air Force Bristol Blenheim bombers and de Havilland Mosquitoes conducted strikes against the airfield in 1940 and 1944. Following the Second World War, the site housed an internment camp for refugees before being transferred to the Royal Danish Air Force upon its formation in 1950.
The base serves as the headquarters for Air Transport Wing Aalborg. It hosts 721 Squadron, which operates Lockheed C-130J-30 Hercules and CL-604 Challenger aircraft. The Danish Jaeger Corps special forces unit is also stationed at the installation.
