Description
Abston Air National Guard Station is a military installation located in Montgomery, Alabama, USA. It serves as the garrison and headquarters for the 226th Combat Communications Group of the United States Air Force, specifically part of the Alabama Air National Guard. The 226th Combat Communications Group, which is one of two Air National Guard Combat Communications Groups nationwide, constitutes over 60% of the U.S. Air Force's tactical communications capability. Its mission involves commanding, organizing, equipping, training, and administering assigned forces to support emergency USAF requirements, as well as providing communications and engineering support for state emergencies.
The 226th Combat Communications Group was originally organized on June 18, 1954, as part of the 225th Radio Relay Squadron. It was formally recognized on September 29, 1971, as the 226th Mobile Communications Group. The unit was redesignated as the 226th Combat Communications Group on April 1, 1976, and again on October 1, 1986, after an interim designation. The group headquarters relocated to Abston Air National Guard Station in February 1996. On October 1, 2013, the 226th gained seven additional squadrons following the inactivation of the 281st Combat Communications Group. The 232d Combat Communications Squadron is also stationed at Abston ANGS. The base has been active since 1972 and remains operational.
