Description

Privolzhskiy, also known as Astrakhan air base, is a Russian Aerospace Forces airfield and air base located near the city of Astrakhan, Astrakhan Oblast, Russia. The base is owned by the Ministry of Defence and operated by the Russian Aerospace Forces. Its military use dates back to August 1956 when the Soviet Union Air Force's 393rd Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment was transferred there. This regiment was part of the 10th Air Defence Division, which later merged into the 12th Air Defence Corps. In August 1958, the 228th Mixed Aviation Regiment was created, moving to Astrakhan in April 1960 for combat training at the Ashuluk Range. Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in October 1992, the base transitioned to the Russian Air Force. The 529th Fighter Aviation Regiment was absorbed into the 209th Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment, which became part of the 51st Air Defence Corps. As of 2022, the base is home to the 116th Centre for Combat Employment of Air Defence Aviation, which operates Mikoyan MiG-29 aircraft under the 185th Centre for Combat Application and Combat Training for the Air Force.
