Description

Westfield-Barnes Regional Airport, also known as Barnes Air National Guard Base, is a joint civil-military airport located in Hampden County, Massachusetts. Originally known as Barnes Municipal Airport, it was established in 1923 as Westfield Aviation Field on land donated by Vincent E. Barnes. The airport's name was later changed to honor the Barnes family following further land donations in 1927 and 1936. Prior to its aviation use, the site served as Camp Bartlett, a Massachusetts Army National Guard summer training facility from 1905 to around 1918, and a mobilization camp for the 26th Division during World War I.

The airport expanded over time, with an administration building, hangar, and beacon light constructed in 1939-1940. Commercial passenger service began in 1937, with American Airlines and Mohawk Airlines operating flights until 1950 and 1959, respectively. The Air Traffic Control Tower opened in 1974. The airport covers 1,200 acres and has two asphalt runways: 02/20 measuring 9,000 by 150 feet (2,743 × 46 m) and 15/33 measuring 5,000 by 100 feet (1,524 × 30 m). A significant construction project to rebuild runway 15-33 commenced in April 2020. As of 2020, the Massachusetts Air National Guard base at this location is home to the 104th Fighter Wing. The airport also hosts a fixed-base operator, a general aviation maintenance facility, flight schools, and the Westfield Aviation Museum.
