Description
Al Dhafra Air Base is a military air base located 30 km south of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, and 225 km from the Iranian coast. Opened in 1983, it is the largest air base in the country and is managed by the United Arab Emirates Air Force, the French Air and Space Force, and the United States Air Force.
The base hosts the majority of the UAE Air Force's combat aircraft, including French Mirage 2000-9EAD/DAD and American F-16E/F Block 60 Desert Falcon aircraft. The 10th Light Aviation Brigade of the land forces, equipped with Airbus Helicopters Fennec and Boeing Apache helicopters, is also stationed there. These units participated in the 1991 invasion of Kuwait.
The United States Air Force's 380th Air Expeditionary Wing maintains a permanent presence at Al Dhafra. Reactivated on January 25, 2002, following the September 11, 2001, attacks, the unit supported Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan, providing reconnaissance and aerial refueling. It also supported Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003 and the subsequent Operation New Dawn, as well as the Combined Joint Task Force - Horn of Africa.
The French Air and Space Force established Air Base 104 within the complex on September 1, 2008. This 'permanent inter-service base,' named Implantation militaire française aux Émirats arabes unis (IMFEAU), comprises three distinct installations for each of the three armed forces. It was officially inaugurated on May 26, 2009, and accommodates 250 personnel since September 2009. French Mirage IV P and C-135 FR aircraft were previously deployed here for Operation Heracles during the War in Afghanistan. Currently, French units include the Escadron de chasse 1/7 Provence with Dassault Rafale aircraft and the Groupe de ravitaillement en vol 02.091 Bretagne with a C-135FR. During Operation Chammal, aimed at strikes against the Islamic State in Iraq, 600 personnel were deployed to ensure the operability of an air group comprising 9 Dassault Rafale fighter-bombers, 1 Breguet Atlantique 2 intelligence aircraft, and 1 Boeing E-3F Awacs, in addition to the pre-positioned C-135FR.
