Description
M. R. Štefánik Airport is located nine kilometers northeast of Bratislava, spanning the municipalities of Bratislava-Ružinov, Bratislava-Vrakuňa, and Ivanka pri Dunaji. Construction began in 1948, and the facility opened in 1951 as Bratislava-Ivanka Airport. In 1993, following Slovak independence, the site was renamed after General Milan Rastislav Štefánik.
The airport is owned by the Slovak Republic and operated by Letisko M. R. Štefánika – Airport Bratislava, a.s. (BTS) under the Ministry of Transport, Construction and Regional Development. The installation hosts the Slovak Government Flying Service. It also serves as an operating base for Ryanair, AirExplore, Smartwings Slovakia, Wizz Air, and Air Horizont. Maintenance firms Austrian Technik Bratislava and East Air Company are based at the facility, which also contains an Air Livery painting bay. The Slovak Civil Aviation Authority maintains offices on the airport property.
Infrastructure includes a passenger terminal completed in 2012 and a General Aviation Terminal (GAT) for private, business, and emergency flight processing. A control tower was added during the 1990s. The facility is classified as Category 4E and can be configured to rescue category 7 or 8 upon request. It operates two perpendicular runways capable of hosting most aircraft types, with the exception of the Airbus A380 and Boeing 747-8. Access to the facility is provided via the D1 motorway and public transport links to Bratislava and Vienna.
