Description

Kastner Army Heliport is a United States Army installation located within Camp Zama in the cities of Zama and Sagamihara, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. The facility is situated approximately 40 km southwest of Tokyo near the Sagami River. Established in 1937 by the Imperial Japanese Army, the site originally served as the Imperial Japanese Army Academy. Following World War II, the installation transitioned to U.S. Army control. It maintains historical structures from the pre-occupation era, including an emergency shelter for the Emperor of Japan and a theater workshop originally used for Imperial Japanese Army ceremonies.

The United States Army operates the installation, which serves as the headquarters for United States Army Japan (USARJ) and I Corps (Forward). The base also hosts the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) Zama Garrison, including its Bilateral Coordination Department and the 4th Engineer Group. Additional stationed units include the U.S. Army Aviation Battalion Japan, the 311th Military Intelligence Battalion, the 78th Signal Battalion, and the 374th Communications Squadron. The Japan Engineer District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is also located on the post.

Operational infrastructure at the heliport supports the use of Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters. Facilities include a signal tower and the Yano Fitness Center. The base also contains educational infrastructure operated by the Department of Defense, including Arnn Elementary School and Zama Middle High School. Personnel at the installation provided support for Operation Tomodachi during the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami.
