Description
Campo Grande Air Force Base (Base Aérea de Campo Grande – ALA5) is located in Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, situated seven kilometers from the city center. Operated by the Brazilian Air Force, the facility shares infrastructure with Campo Grande International Airport.
Construction at the site began in 1932. The base originated from an Aviation Detachment established on 23 January 1934, followed by its formal creation via Decree 3,302 on 22 May 1941. The base was dedicated on 19 April 1945 and has been in continuous use since 1941.
The base hosts multiple units from the Brazilian Air Force and the Brazilian Army. Air Force units include the 2nd Squadron of the 10th Aviation Group (2°/10°GAv) and the 1st Squadron of the 15th Aviation Group (1°/15°GAv), which operate C-105A Amazonas transport aircraft. The 3rd Squadron of the 3rd Aviation Group (3°/3°GAv) is also stationed at the base, operating A-29A and B Super Tucano aircraft. Other Air Force types present include the Sikorsky H-60L Black Hawk and Cessna C-98A Caravan.
The 3rd Aviation Battalion of the Brazilian Army (3° BAvEx) is also based at the facility. This unit operates rotary-wing aircraft, including the HA-1 Fennec, HM-1 Pantera, and HM-3 Cougar.
