Description

22 Wing North Bay is a Royal Canadian Air Force facility in North Bay, Ontario. Founded as RCAF Station North Bay on 1 September 1951, the base was established during the expansion of continental air defenses. It was renamed Canadian Forces Base North Bay in 1966 and redesignated 22 Wing in 1993.

The facility is subordinate to 1 Canadian Air Division and is the center for North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) operations in Canada. Stationed units include 21 Aerospace Control and Warning Squadron, 51 Aerospace Control and Warning Operational Training Squadron, and Detachment 2, First Air Force of the United States Air Force. The base also hosts the 22 Wing Air Reserve Flight and the 22 Wing Band. Operations involve air sovereignty and aerospace defense, including the identification and monitoring of aircraft in Canadian airspace. The base operates the Space Surveillance Operations Centre, which tracks objects at altitudes between 6,000 and 40,000 kilometers as part of the United States Space Surveillance Network.

Infrastructure includes the Sgt David L. Pitcher Building, an above-ground facility opened in 2006 for command and control operations. The base also contains the NORAD Underground Complex, an installation situated 60 stories underground within a granite cavern. This complex utilized the Semi-Automatic Ground Environment (SAGE) computer system until 1983, followed by the Regional Operations Control Centre/Sector Operations Control Centre (ROCC/SOCC) system. The underground facility was transitioned to storage in 2006.

The base has no stationed flying units; airfield assets were removed following the departure of the last flying squadron in 1992. Historical aircraft hosted include the Canadair Sabre, T-33 Silver Star, CF-100 Canuck, and CF-101 Voodoo. From 1961 to 1972, the base provided command and control for two squadrons of CIM-10 BOMARC surface-to-air missiles.
