Description

Elizovo Airport, also known as Yelizovo Airport or Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky Airport, is located in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Kamchatka Krai, Russia. The airfield was first mentioned in 1942, and on May 4, 1942, the 128th Mixed Aviation Division began its formation there. Until the end of World War II, military aviation in Kamchatka was represented by the 71st mixed aviation regiment of the 1st OKA Far Eastern Fleet and the 2nd separate naval bomber aviation regiment of the NKVD Border Troops.

The airport serves as a base for several military units, all part of the 7060th Order of Labour Red Banner Naval Aviation Air Base. These include the 175th Independent Shipborne Anti-submarine Helicopter Squadron, the 317th Independent Composite Antisubmarine Aviation Regiment, an Independent Unmanned Aerial vehicle Squadron, and the 865th Fighter Aviation Regiment. The 865th Fighter Aviation Regiment, activated in 1939, has been located at the base since 1945. It was reequipped with Mikoyan MiG-31s in 1985 and transferred to the Russian Pacific Fleet in 1998. The 317th Independent Mixed Aviation Regiment of the Pacific Fleet was established in November 1961, initially operating Tupolev Tu-16Rs, Beriev Be-6s, and Mil Mi-4M helicopters, later replacing maritime aircraft with Beriev Be-12s in 1969. Naval operations have also involved Tupolev Tu-95MS aircraft.

As of 2024, satellite imagery shows several dozen MiG-31 aircraft, turboprop transports, and helicopters dispersed throughout the airfield. In 2012, a reconstruction project began on runway 16R/34L to widen and extend it to 3,400 meters, along with terminal and apron improvements. A new passenger terminal, managed by Airports of Regions, is under construction with an expected completion date of December 2024.
