Description
Goldwater Air National Guard Base, previously known as Sky Harbor Air National Guard Base, is a facility of the United States Air National Guard located adjacent to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport in Phoenix, Arizona. The base was established in 1949 through a 99-year lease. During the 1990s, the facility underwent reconstruction to accommodate the development of a third runway at the adjacent civilian airport. On December 9, 2016, the base was officially renamed Goldwater Air National Guard Base, honoring former United States Senator from Arizona and Air National Guard member, Barry Goldwater. The base is owned by the Department of Defense and operated by the US Air Force, with control exercised by the Arizona Air National Guard. It is currently operational. The primary unit stationed at Goldwater Air National Guard Base is the 161st Air Refueling Wing of the Arizona Air National Guard. The airfield itself is shared with Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and features three concrete runways: 8/26 measuring 3,501.8 meters, 7L/25R measuring 3,139.4 meters, and 7R/25L measuring 2,377.4 meters.
