Description
Goldwater Air National Guard Base is located in Phoenix, Arizona, adjacent to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. The facility was established in 1949 under a 99-year lease and was originally designated as Sky Harbor Air National Guard Base. The installation was rebuilt during the 1990s to accommodate the addition of a third runway at the adjacent civil airport. On December 9, 2016, the base was renamed in honor of former United States Senator and Arizona Air National Guard member Barry Goldwater.
The base is owned by the Department of Defense and operated by the United States Air Force, with control held by the Arizona Air National Guard. The 161st Air Refueling Wing is the host unit stationed at the facility. Goldwater Air National Guard Base shares airfield infrastructure with Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. The 161st Air Refueling Wing operates KC-135R Stratotanker aircraft from the site.
