Description
The facility is located on the Avenida de las Américas, five kilometers north of central Guayaquil in the Guayas Province of Ecuador. It is situated in the Guayas River delta on level terrain. Formerly designated as Simón Bolívar International Airport, the site was renamed in 2006.
Infrastructure development was authorized following 2003 and 2004 assessments. A 50,000-square-meter terminal for national and international traffic was inaugurated on July 27, 2006. Following the transition to this new terminal, the original terminal building was converted into a convention center. The domestic area of the facility underwent expansion in July 2014.
The facility serves Guayaquil and is the second busiest in Ecuador. It functions as a stop for flights between mainland Ecuador and the Galápagos Islands, providing refueling and passenger boarding services. Airfield infrastructure accommodates aircraft types including the Boeing 747 and Airbus A340-600.
