Description

Ilopango International Airport is located in the eastern district of San Salvador, El Salvador. The facility functioned as the nation's primary international airport until January 1980, when international services were transferred to El Salvador International Airport. In April 1964, the airport received its first jet airliner, a Boeing 707. During the Salvadoran Civil War, the site was targeted for bombing by guerrilla forces. The airport was also utilized during the Iran-Contra affair for the transport of funding and armaments to Contra rebels in Nicaragua.

In 2001, administration of the airport transitioned from the military to the Comisión Ejecutiva Portuaria Autónoma (CEPA). Current operations are restricted to military, air taxi, and charter aviation. The facility supports regional passenger services for carriers including TAG Airlines and CM Airlines. The Salvadoran Civil Aviation Authority maintains its headquarters on the airport grounds.

Infrastructure includes a passenger terminal inaugurated in December 2023 and several aircraft hangars. The former terminal building houses the National Aviation Museum (Museo Nacional de Aviación). The facility supports the operation of military aircraft and regional commercial transports.
