Jever Air Base

Jever Air Base is located 4.3 km west-southwest of Schortens in Lower Saxony, Germany. Established in 1936 for the Luftwaffe, the airfield was seized by the British Army in April 1945 and designated Advanced Landing Ground B-117. From 1952 to 1961, the facility operated as RAF Jever as part of the Cold War British Forces in West Germany.

During the RAF administration, the base hosted multiple squadrons and aircraft types. 20 Squadron reformed at the base in 1952 with de Havilland Vampire FB.9 aircraft. 112 Squadron operated Vampire FB.5s between 1952 and 1953. 4 Squadron and 93 Squadron were stationed at Jever from 1952 to 1961, flying Vampire FB.5 and FB.9 variants, followed by Canadair Sabre F.4 and Hawker Hunter F.4 and F.6 aircraft. 98 Squadron and 118 Squadron operated Hunter F.4s from 1955 to 1957. 2 Squadron was present from 1957 to 1961, utilizing Supermarine Swift FR.5 and Hunter FR.10 aircraft.

Control of the base returned to the German Air Force in 1961, and the site was designated a NATO air base. In September 1979, NATO’s Tactical Leadership Programme (TLP) relocated to Jever to conduct tactical air operations training for allied coalition forces. The TLP remained at the base until March 1989, when it transferred to Florennes Air Base in Belgium.

Military flying operations at Jever Air Base ceased in September 2013. The facility is currently owned by the Federal Defence Forces of Germany and operated by the Luftwaffe. It hosts elements of the German Air Force Regiment.
