Description

JMSDF Ōminato Base is a Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force facility located on Mutsu Bay in Mutsu, Aomori Prefecture. Established on 16 September 1953, the base initially served as the site for the newly formed Ōminato District Force under the National Safety Agency Coastal Safety Force. The Ōminato Garrison was established in January 1954 and remained active until August 1962. The Ōminato Air Corps was formed on 16 May 1956. On 26 March 2008, this corps was reorganized as the 25th Air Group and placed under the control of the Fleet Air Force.

The base is operated by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force and serves as the primary station for the Ōminato District Force. Stationed units include the 25th Air Corps, which operates the 251st Squadron. This squadron utilizes Sikorsky SH-60J and SH-60K Seahawk helicopters to conduct anti-submarine warfare and patrols of the Tsugaru Strait. The base also serves as an operational site for Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk utility helicopters assigned to the 73rd Squadron at Tateyama Air Base. Administrative and support units on-site include the Ōminato Communications Command, the Ōminato Base Operations Corps, and the Ōminato Repair Supply Station.

Infrastructure at the site consists of both naval port facilities and a military aerodrome. The port hosts vessels from the Fleet Escort Force, including destroyers. Shore-based facilities include an ammunition maintenance supply station, a district police unit, and the Ōminato Music Corps. The Self-Defense Forces Ōminato Hospital, which opened in August 1960, was downgraded to a clinic in March 2021 as part of a reorganization of the Yokosuka Hospital functions.

Recent organizational changes include the abolition of the 73rd Air Group Ōminato Air Detachment on 2 April 2018. The 25th Air Corps currently manages the airfield operations through the 251st Maintenance Supply Corps and the Ōminato Air Base Corps.
