Description
King Khalid Air Base is a Royal Saudi Air Force installation located in southwest Saudi Arabia near Khamis Mushayt in the 'Asir Region. Established in 1960, the facility was designed and built by Ballast Nedam for BAE, with additional construction occurring through the 1970s and 1980s. During the 1991 Gulf War, the base hosted the United States Air Force 37th Tactical Fighter Wing, which launched F-117 stealth fighters from the site. Royal Air Force Vickers VC10 tankers also operated from the base to support Panavia Tornado GR1 operations. Following the conflict, the Royal Saudi Air Force stationed the 66th Squadron and its associated Reconnaissance Intelligence Centre at the base, followed by the formation of the 83rd Squadron.
The Royal Saudi Air Force currently operates the installation as the station for RSAF Wing 5. The base hosts multiple fighter units, including No. 6 Squadron and No. 55 Squadron, both operating F-15SA Strike Eagles. No. 6 Squadron also operates F-15S aircraft. Rotary-wing assets stationed at the facility include Eurocopter AS532M Cougars of No. 99 Squadron and a detachment from No. 14 Squadron operating Bell 412EP and AB212 helicopters. The base also supports unmanned aerial vehicle operations, housing No. 202 and No. 203 Squadrons, which operate CH-4B platforms. Infrastructure includes specialized service facilities for the McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle.
