Description
Knjaz Danilo Airbase is located in Golubovci, Montenegro. Named after a 19th-century ruler, the base shares a runway and support facilities with Podgorica Airport. During the Yugoslav era, the installation hosted the 172nd Aviation Brigade of the Yugoslav Air Force and functioned as the primary facility for basic and primary pilot training.
Infrastructure included the Šipčanik complex, an underground aircraft shelter tunneled into a hill. This complex was connected to the main runway by a taxiway, with a wider northern section designed to facilitate aircraft scrambles. During the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia, airbase facilities were targeted and G-4 Super Galeb aircraft belonging to the Leteće zvezde group were destroyed.
The airbase is operated by the Montenegrin Air Force. Because the Montenegrin Air Force does not operate fixed-wing aircraft, the Šipčanik complex was decommissioned and converted to civilian use in the early 2000s.
